Cleft Lip and Palate in Finland: Parental Histories, Course of Pregnancy and Selected Environmental Factors
1 Third Department of Pathology, University of Helsinki SF-00290 Helsinki 29, Finland
Five hundred and ninety-nine cases of oral clefts reported to the Finnish Register of Congenital Malformations were analysed in order to study the aetiology of cleft lip and palate. Several of the factors studied (parental age, socio-economic status, threatened abortion, pelvic X-ray examinations prior to pregnancy, emotional factors, birthweight) were significantly associated with the birth of children with oral clefts. Cases with cleft palate (CP) differed from those with cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL(P)) in regard to the association of some of the factors. The results lend further support to the concept of multifactorial causation of oral clefts, as well as to the common belief that CL(P) and CP are aetiologically different entities.
