The Application of a Quantitative Estimate of Cough Frequency to Epidemiological Surveys*

A method by which cough frequency can be uniquely ranked on a ten point scale is described. Six statements on cough frequency are grouped into nine specified pairs which are presented to the subject on cards, one pair of statements to each card. The subject's responses yield an unique cough frequency score. Inconsistencies can be readily detected at the time. The method has been used to compare cough frequency in subgroups of four industrial populations and to estimate changes in cough frequency during a prospective survey. The sensitivity and discrimination of the index is illustrated with reference to smoking habit, other respiratory symptoms and the presence of a loose cough. A good correlation has been obtained with questions on cough from standard respiratory symptom questionnaires. Cough scores at the upper end of the scale are associated with impaired airways function but the correlation is far weaker for the lower cough frequencies.
