Teaching the Teacher to Teach

MARIANNE GROTJAHN1

1 Department of Hygiene and Medical Microbiology, Lübeck Medical School 24 Lübeck, Ratzeburger Allee 160, Germany

This paper contains a report on a Workshop convened by the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization and held in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 3–13 September 1972. It was entitled Teaching Social and Preventive Medicine' and gave medical teachers an orientation in education theories and methods. Participants, individually and in groups, undertook exercises in developing educational objectives, in designing experimental teaching units and in selecting appropriate mechanisms for evaluation. In the end, though the programme was deliberately not concerned with determining the scope and content of social medicine, hypothetical undergraduate curricula were drafted.
