The Training of Epidemiologists in Schools of Public Health in the United States: a Historical Note
1Dean and Professor of Epidemiology, Program in Epidemiology, School of Public Health, University of California Berkeley, California 94720, U. S. A.

The first advanced degree in epidemiology in the United States was, as far as can be ascertained, awarded by the Johns Hopkins University in 1921. From then until the early 1950s emphasis throughout the country was on infectious disease, and almost all students already had a professional degree, the majority being medical doctors. Now programmes cover all forms of illness as well as applied epidemiology and probably half the candidates for doctoral degrees in epidemiology in the country hold no previous professional degree.
