Practical Work in Epidemiology and Community Medicine for Medical Undergraduates

JOHN PEMBERTON1

1 Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, The Queen's University of Belfast Belfast, Northern Ireland

Three types of practical work carried out in five week community medicine clerkships are described. 1. Projects. These consist of epidemiological studies using data which the students collect during general practice assignments or from hospital records. 2. Programmes of Care. These are problem orientated studies dealing with the social and medical aspects associated with a general disability in the population such as mental handicap, deafness or old age. 3. Epidemiological exercises. These are carried out by the students using prepared data and official reports.
