Preface

Paul Elliott and Tim C Peakman

Guest Editors

This supplement issue of the International Journal of Epidemiology presents an extensive series of validation experiments that were undertaken during the development of the UK Biobank sample handling and storage protocol. Whilst there was literature available to support parts of the protocol development, there was no systematic and comprehensive resource for a study of the size and scale of UK Biobank. The validation studies were commissioned with leading groups in the UK and their results are given in the following papers.

The work presented here represents a huge investment of time and effort by the investigators and other members of the UK academic community in support of the project. We hope that not only will researchers in specific areas find much of interest, but also, taken as a whole, the supplement will provide a valuable resource for those considering establishing their own biobank projects.
