Visualizing mortality
E-mail: mary.shaw{at}bristol.ac.uk
Many people have a dark curiosity for cemeteries, as places of remembrance, reflection and imaginings. They are attracted perhaps by their air of tranquillity, the varying styles and symbolism of the headstones and monuments, and a fascination with the lives of strangers that have come to be condensed into a few enduring facts inscribed in stone.
These photos were taken in Arnos Vale cemetery in Bristol. If any IJE readers share in this rather morose hobby, we would be interested to see their photographs, in order to compare how the dead are commemorated around the world.
