Throughout the world the living conditions for children, and their health outcomes, vary immensely. Some children enjoy the safety and security of home, family, and all they need to thrive; others have to contend with conditions of extreme poverty. The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 200 million child labourers worldwide.1

These images of children in Calcutta, by Indian photographer Achinto, powerfully illustrate the circumstances of such children who are forced to fend for themselves, yet they also capture something of the universal spirit of childhood.
