Tuberculosis in the Workplace. Marilyn J Field. Oxford: National Academy Press, 2001, pp. 356, £35.95, ISBN 0-309-07330-8.
This book comprises a report prepared by the National Academy of Sciences at the request of the US Congress. At issue is the risk of tuberculosis among health care workers and the possible effects of federal guidelines and regulations intended to protect workers from such risks.
Obviously, the book has a dominantly US perspective. The bulk of the material is targeted towards the needs of regulatory and government officials who are required to develop and implement institutional statutory guidelines. However, much of the material is relevant to educationalists in occupational health. Practising physicians will find little to interest them and some synthesis of the regulatory framework and practical measures for control and prevention might have been helpful in presenting the book to a wider readership, although there are several other relevant titles for the physician. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the book was the process which the committee went through as they endeavoured to answer the questions posed to them by Congress.
