Commentary: Environmental determinants of dimorphic systemic mycoses—the macro and the micro

The article by Barrozo et al.1 in this issue is a most interesting investigation of the effect of climatic features on the yearly incidence of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), a serious systemic mycosis of Latin America. The epidemiology of PCM is very difficult to study due to the long and unpredictable latency period of the common (adult) form of the disease. The authors have taken care to restrict their analysis to area residents with the uncommon acute form of the disease.
