The hospital activity analysis records of patients with the principal diagnosis of appendicitis admitted to hospital in Wales in 1971 were studied to investigate variations in practice between surgical firms and between hospital management committees. Comparisons were made between 59 consultants whose lists included 20 or more appendicitis patients during the year. Significant differences were observed in the proportions of patients admitted as emergencies and in the average duration of stay in hospital. Duration of stay was found to be highly dependent on the patient's age.
