The areal difference in tuberculosis prevalence between Prefectures and cities is still a matter of concern in Japan. It has been found that the present situation in tuberculosis prevalence in this country is closely connected not only with the effects of the implementation of TB control measures but also with socio-economic conditions, particularly the grade of urbanization. Since various kinds of information on health and disease in different sizes of area are routinely collected and published, the methods presented in this paper would be applicable to many other diseases in the same way as to tuberculosis.
