Two sources of sampling bias introduced in the epidemiological survey of a chronic disease are considered. A method is presented for estimating the number of patients who are missed during a survey because they have the disease at an early stage or in a mild form and is applied to data from a survey of Buerger's disease in Java Indonesia. An extension of the method to estimate the contribution of the disease to patient mortality is suggested.
