Corrections for Sampling Bias in the Epidemiological Survey of a Chronic Disease

A. H. SMITH1, and G. L. HILL2

12Department of Preventive and Social Medicine and Department of Surgery, University of Otago Medical School Dunedin, New Zealand

Reprint requests should be addressed to Dr. A. H. Smith.

Two sources of sampling bias introduced in the epidemiological survey of a chronic disease are considered. A method is presented for estimating the number of patients who are ‘missed’ during a survey because they have the disease at an early stage or in a mild form and is applied to data from a survey of Buerger's disease in Java Indonesia. An extension of the method to estimate the contribution of the disease to patient mortality is suggested.
