The teratogenic effects of alcohol have been recognized in the fetal
alcohol syndrome. The syndrome is associated with very high levels of
maternal consumption. Studies of the relation between much lower levels of
consumption and pregnancy outcome seem to indicate consistently lower
birthweight among children born to mothers drinking more than 140 g
absolute alcohol per week, or about two drinks a day.
