A field workshop on Community Medicine and Primary Health Care was introduced in 1972 as an integral part of the core courses on epidemiology and social medicine in the Master of Public Health syllabus at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem. Its main objective is to give students an opportunity to study the development of community medicine within and through primary medical care, with special emphasis on the use of epidemiology in daily practice. The students' experience centres around systematic observations of health services, with specific reference to various primary health care activities, surveillance and evaluation activities, and community medicine programmes in a primary health care setting. The workshop was favourably appraised by students and staff.
