The Definition of the Hospital Catchment Area and its Population as a Denominator for the Evaluation of Hospital Returns in Developing Countries*,{dagger}

HANS J. DIESFELD1

1 Reader in Tropical Public Health, Institute of Tropical Public Health, Medical Faculty, Heidelberg University, Federal Republic of Germany

A method is presented which may help to improve the analysis of morbidity data from hospital records. Hospital returns should report in the form of ‘hospital recording rate’ stating the observed number of each diagnosis in a given period of time, whilst the ‘effective population’ of the ‘hospital catchment area’ serves as a denominator.

The hospital catchment area and its population are defined by a scoring system reflecting the estimated degree of centrality, which considers the attractivity and accessibility of each hospital, as well as the demographic situation.

This procedure may also supply valuable information for regional hospital planning.
